Gordon Edes out at the Globe?
Just when you think the bloodletting at the Globe can’t continue, another highly regarded columnist leaves. Rumors are flying online, and among sports journalists, that Celtics reporter Peter May has taken the buyout just in time for the playoffs.
In what could be an even more devastating blow to the paper’s sports coverage, Scott’s Shots reports that Gordon Edes is also leaving the Globe.
Scott writes that Edes hopes to become a national reporter for Yahoo! Sports. The only holdup is wrangling over whether or not he can take the buyout offer that fellow sports writer Jackie MacMullan took earlier this month. Globe sports editor Joe Sullivan told Boston Daily that he couldn’t confirm the report since the paper is still in the midst of its voluntary buyout offer, but that the process should be over sometime next week.
If it plays out as expected, it will be a Steve Bailey-sized blow to Boston’s paper of record. In the past few years, the Globe’s Sox coverage has changed beat writers from Edes to Bob Hohler to Chris Snowand back to Edes again, with an assist from Amalie Benjamin.
Amidst that upheaval, Edes’ has been consistently excellent, and he is much loved by fans for his straightforward style.
So for those of you keeping track at home, the Globe has lost Steve Bailey, and business reporter Peter J. Howe, along with sports writers Jackie Mac, Peter May, and Gordon Edes. Even automotive columnist Royal Ford penned his final column for the paper this weekend.
Somebody make it stop.
