Krispy Kreme Gets Kold
When we last left Krispy Kreme, it was being invaded by Canton-based Dunkin’ Donuts. The Southerner’s donut chain of choice has been struggling mightily in this lean economy, and our favorite coffee and donut shop decided to head south and strike while its enemy is weak.
Krispy Kreme hopes to survive by taking a page out of the Dunkin’ playbook and expanding into the ice cream market. As avowed Dunkin’ fans, we’ve got to admit we’re intrigued by the possibilities.
Krispy Kreme, unlike Dunkin, which teamed up with Baskin-Robbins, developed its own line of soft-serve. The Winston-Salem-based chain is also debuting a toppings bar. Hopefully not like the pseudo-performance art model Baskin-Robbins is testing in Foxboro.
This move may motivate us to turn like Benedict Arnold. Why? Because we can’t get the idea of a Krispy Kreme sundae out of our mind. Imagine it—a warm glazed donut, with a pile of vanilla soft-serve plopped on top. Add a drizzle of hot fudge and a cherry, and we’re willing to turn traitor.
