Summer Fitness Is Happening In Unusual Places
In Boston, you can find fitness classes in innovative locations such as Fenway Park, the Gillette Stadium field house, and even inside of a flower shop. Come summer, when Boston becomes the capital of free summer fitness, you can even do a bootcamp class at City Hall, Zumba in Post Office Square, and kickboxing on the Greenway. But a Pilates bootcamp on a restaurant’s patio? Interesting.
Pilates pro Jennifer Phelan is teaming up with Sterling’s Boston to launch “Bikinis & Bellinis Bootcamp,” which will be held on its patio every Saturday morning in May, June, and September, and every other Saturday in July and August. All classes are from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. and will include a free 45-minute Pilates bootcamp workout. NOTE: Even though the reps at Sterling’s were trying to be clever with the name (clearly aimed at women), the “bellini” part is not free (reps say that Mass. doesn’t allow restaurants to give away free alcohol. Darn Puritans).
It’s actually an interesting marketing tactic. With many restaurants shifting towards healthier options, hosting fitness classes is a logical way to get health enthusiasts in the door. Plus, after a hard workout you’ll most likely be starving. Then, you’ll just “happen” to be at a restaurant serving brunch. You can sip a bellini and try some of the restaurant’s healthier options such as vegetable quiche and multi grain Belgian waffles with fresh fruit.
You should definitely arrive early if you plan on attending a class. Phelan’s classes are highly sought after and since returning from maternity leave, we hear that her classes are even more crowded than usual. And she tells us that she is “pumped” to begin teaching this series. “I’m just now getting back into teaching [after giving birth] and have been sharing my fitness journey with my students and followers as I work to balance motherhood and getting your body and career back,” she says.
Also happening: We hear that SurfSet, the fitness-meets-surfing class that was featured on Shark Tank will be hangin’ 10 (sorry) at the Revere Hotel’s pool deck this summer. The hotel’s rep says he is not ready to share the details yet, but we know for sure that this is happening. Although SurfSet had a few classes in our area off and on over the last few years, according to the company’s website, there are currently no classes at all in Boston, so it will make a fun addition to your summer fitness plans. If you can’t wait, there are classes right now in Quincy, Pembroke, and Swampscott.
