Arraignment Postponed in Fatal Beacon Street Crash [Updated]

The arraignment of an Allston woman accused of causing a fatal Back Bay crash has been postponed while investigators continue to look at the case and figure out exactly what happened.

Alghazali Ghuzlan, 26, was originally arrested Monday night and faced two counts of motor vehicle homicide, one count of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and one count of unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. But in a statement sent from the Suffolk District Attorney’s office late Tuesday afternoon, officials said because they’ve received “conflicting information” during interviews in the last two days, the suspect has been released from police custody without charges for now.

Police and prosecutors agreed postponing the arraignment was in everyone’s best interest until further canvassing and evidentiary analysis are complete. “The identity of the vehicle operator is the primary focus of the investigation into Saturday night’s fatal crash,” according to a spokesman from the Suffolk DA’s office. “We’ve advised the Campbell and Lanzillotti families of this decision and assured them that every step we take in this probe is with the intention of seeing justice done for them and their loved ones.”

An Allston woman police say was behind the wheel at the time of a fatal crash that killed a Brookline couple walking through the Back Bay on Saturday night is due in court to face charges.

Alghazali Ghuzlan, 26, is expected to be arraigned today in Boston Municipal Court following her arrest last night, according to a spokesperson from the Suffolk District Attorney’s office.

Ghuzlan faces two counts of motor vehicle homicide, one count of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and one count of unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, all in connection with Saturday night’s fatal collision on Beacon Street.

According to police, around 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, Ghuzlan and a passenger were traveling down Beacon Street when she allegedly struck another vehicle after running a red light, causing the car to flip over, and hit and kill two pedestrians.

Jack Lanzillotti, 28, and his girlfriend, Jessica Campbell, 27, both of Brookline, were killed in the accident. Lanzillotti, a Boston University graduate who worked for the Red Sox, was pronounced dead at the scene. Campbell, a Northeastern graduate who worked as a retail analyst in Boston, was rushed to Brigham and Women’s Hospital where she later died, officials said.

Ghuzlan and another person in the vehicle with her were transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. According to reports, Ghuzlan did not have a valid driver’s license at the time of the accident.
