Matt. Martin. What’s the difference, you both have the same last name, right?

Boston City Councilor Matt O’Malley was caught up in a case of mistaken identity during Tuesday’s Democratic presidential debate when people on Twitter directed comments for former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley at the Jamaica Plain resident instead.

So, Councilor O’Malley, a supporter of presidential candidate O’Malley, had some fun with the confused people on Twitter.

Of course it wasn’t all fun and games, this is politics after all. The councilor made sure to point the confused people of Twitter to the presidential candidate’s website for more information on certain issues during the debate.

In September, O’Malley hosted a cocktail hour for the former governor at Doyle’s Cafe in September.  At the event the presidential candidate stepped behind the bar, as is tradition for pols at the Jamaica Plain establishment, to pour pints for patrons and supporters.

In a brief interview during a break in the debate, O’Malley said he found the whole thing entertaining.

“It’s pretty amusing. I’m proud to support Martin and proud to share his name,” said O’Malley, adding that this type of mix up has not happened before on social media.
