Carly Carioli is stepping down from his position as editor-in-chief of Boston.

After nearly two-and-a-half years at the magazine, Carioli announced his resignation to a room full of staffers Wednesday afternoon.

Carioli joined Boston in July 2013 after serving as editor-in-chief of the Boston Phoenix from 2010 to 2013.

“The past two years have been extremely gratifying, and I’m proud of everything we’ve accomplished together, from delivering our audience award-winning journalism, to developing new digital products like BestOfBoston.com, to launching a Chinese-language edition of the magazine. It’s been both an honor and a privilege to work with some of the most talented people in the business, covering the biggest stories in Boston at the best city magazine in the country,” said Carioli in a statement.

His last day with the magazine is December 31. The last issue Carioli is overseeing production of as editor-in-chief is the February issue.

Executive editor Rachel Slade, articles editor Chris Vogel, and design director Eric Mongeon will oversee the magazine’s operations in Carioli’s absence. The search for the next editor-in-chief of Boston will be overseen by Tom McGrath, Metro Corp.’s executive vice president of content and strategy.

“In testament of Carly and his team’s accomplishments, last May, Boston magazine won the award for General Excellence given out by the City Regional Magazine Association. Carly has been covering this market for over 20 years and has a great knowledge of the city, its power structure and institutions. He has been a great team player and I will miss the fun and enthusiasm he brought to his job every day. We wish him continued success,” said Rick Waechter, President and COO of Metro Corp. and CEO of Boston.

Carioli has not announced what his next plans are.
