48 Hours of Freedom
It’s the weekend. You can spend it trying to buy an Oprah/Obama ticket, or you can give up and enjoy it. Here are some suggestions for your precious two days of total freedom, prepared for you by Boston Daily.
Tonight
Break out the smelling salts. Jacoby Ellsbury signs copies of the 2007 World Series DVD at 4 p.m.
We love Cake in both its pastry and the musical forms. CAKE’s Unlimited Sunshine Festival comes to a cloud-covered Orpheum tonight.
If Guinness and brogues are more your thing, you’ve got the Irish Hip-Hop Throwdown at the Middle East.
During the doldrums of winter, we like to cheer ourselves up with funky, bright works of art. The pinkcomma gallery in the South End hosts Design Nearby: Prints Charming, a venue for local artists to display and sell their prints on everything from t-shirts to wood.
Saturday
Get the vision of sugar plums dancing through the kids’ heads by getting them all hyped up on sugar. The Ritz-Carlton’s Sugar Plum Tea is a pre-matinee and kid-friendly party complete with cookie decorating and visits from characters from The Nutcracker. Hopefully the little ones can make it home before the sugar crash hits them.
This ain’t a lie—whenever we hear Hall & Oates playing at the grocery store or at the doctor’s office, we always sing along. That stuff should come with a warning label it’s so addictive.
Camouflage doesn’t come only in army green. The North Face’s NSE Collection is inspired by Japan’s white birch forests and is available in very limited quantities. Get your hands on the coveted ski gear at Bodega.
If your neighbor’s inability to shovel or prune their shrubs continues to make you feel like a Grinch, get out of the city and head for bucolic Killington for the Vermont Holiday Festival. The event features more than 100 lit trees, sleigh rides, and Santa. Just be sure to leave early to ensure your newfound holiday spirit isn’t undone by ski traffic.
Sunday
It’s Jane Austen’s birthday and you didn’t get her anything nice. No worries. WGBH hosts Jane Austen’s Birthday Celebration, where you can relive those memories from your senior year Literature class by discussing the author’s legacy, try out some period dance, and get a preview of Masterpiece Theater’s The Complete Jane Austen.
Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful at smuggling a golden retriever out of the Bay Colony Dog Show on its opening night. For its final day, we’ve gotten smarter and will go for a smaller breed. Like a puggle.
Ballet doesn’t always come in a tutu. The Urban Nutcracker is a modern twist on the holiday favorite for all you nonconformists out there.
The South End Open Market has been closed for over a month now, but you can get your fix of craft market goodness in the South End this Sunday. The SoWa Holiday Market brings the artists you love inside, and even provides parking. Fa-la-la-la-la, indeed.
