Bright Young Thing

Once upon a time, there was a girl who would pile on all of her jewelry and all of her mother’s jewelry (and sometimes, all of her grandmother’s jewelry) and parade around the house. But as that girl, Emily Scott, grew up, she put aside those childish things and studied advertising at Boston University, part of her plan to become a “superwealthy businesswoman in a penthouse office, wearing suits every day.”

The corporate flirtation didn’t last long, however. After graduation, the New Hampshire native enrolled in a two-year jewelry-making course, and in 2007 she launched her eponymous line. Scott, 28, now works out of her year-old store and studio, E. Scott Originals, on Highland Avenue in Somerville.

“I love all the decades from the 1920s to the 1960s, and all the different styles,” she says of her influences. “Women would ‘get dressed’ and put thought into everything.”

It’s fitting, then, that her jewelry has a decidedly vintage flavor. Large handcarved and cast-sterling-silver anchors strung on chains or leather cords pay homage to Sailor Jerry tattoos; other charms and pendants include wings and skeleton keys. Scott also creates custom engagement rings and wedding bands that incorporate everything from shells to three-carat family diamonds.

For the holidays, Scott is using sparkly gemstones and pearls in her designs. “It’s a throwback to the glamour days,” she says. “When you get into the winter, everything gets sort of dull. I wanted to put out something fun.”
