Emerging Designer: Bexx Fine

What do Wonder Woman and a part-time hairstylist from Brighton have in common? If the hairstylist is Rebecca Fine, the brains behind the new accessory line Bexx Fine, the answer is blue hair, uncompromising style, and superhuman stamina.

Fine, who grew up in Peabody and graduated from Syracuse with a BA in Fine Arts, has a habit of organizing pub crawl costume parties to celebrate her late-May birthday. Fine opted for a superhero theme this year, chose Wonder Woman as her muse, and picked up comic books in early April for inspiration. And it worked — perhaps too well. Fine was considering writing a memoir at the time, but her focus shifted. “I wasn’t sleeping well because I kept thinking of ideas for my book,” she explains. “The ideas were keeping me awake.”

Then, at 4 a.m. on a Thursday a couple of weeks later, Fine got out of bed and pulled out an old pair of mint green stilettos. She cut up the Wonder Woman comics and started plastering them over the shoes. By the time she had to leave for work, she’d finished one shoe. “I took a picture and showed my coworkers and they were all blown away. By the end of the day,” she says, “I had everything in my head. I had a logo idea and knew I wanted to cover everything in comic books.”

A mere two months later, Fine has launched a website, is hitting up comic book conventions on both coasts, and is still short on sleep. She had to cancel her birthday pub crawl because she was too busy, but couldn’t be happier about morphing the crafty hobby into a bona fide business. In addition to shoes, her custom (mostly vintage) pieces (ranging from $4 to $250) include clutches, wristlets, wallets, bows, and iPhone cases, which she crafts out of her studio apartment in Brighton. Fine also does custom furniture projects as well.

Intrigued? Hit up the Bexx Fine launch party this weekend at The Mission — there will be raffle prizes, a costume contest (duh), and food aplenty, and proceeds will benefit both Fine’s trip to the San Diego Comic Con as well as the Melanoma Education Foundation, a non-profit started by her father in honor of her older brother, who passed away from the disease. So just how does she make it all happen? “Well, I’m a superhero,” she says. “It’s magic.”
