EDM Fans Sent to Hospital During Avicii Show at TD Garden

Emergency responders shipped more than 30 people to area hospitals, and treated dozens more on the scene at TD Garden, for drug and alcohol related issues during an EDM concert Wednesday night.

Ambulances lined up outside of the venue as Avicii, a Swedish DJ headlining the event, continued to play inside. Boston Emergency Medical Service workers arrived at the scene around 8:30 p.m., when they received a call about two patients that needed to be sent to the hospital.

Soon after, Boston EMS declared a Phase 2 MCI, or Mass Casualty Incident, which means there were between 11 and 30 people that required medical attention at TD Garden. They said in a tweet that an MCI means in some cases that there are more patients than there are responders who can treat them. A large emergency vehicle, called Tango 10, was staged outside of TD Garden to treat around 50 people on scene.

While what caused so many concertgoers to seek medical assistance remains under investigation, officials said dehydration, alcohol consumption, and possible drug use could be to blame. Police suspect that there may have been some sort of “illicit drug” involved, but did not specifically identify what kind, according to the Boston Globe.

Police said they would be interviewing the people that were sent to area hospitals to find out if they took anything that could have led to their need for medical assistance during the show. There were no fatal overdoses as a result of the incident.

The Grammy-nominated DJ, whose Boston concert kicked off a world tour called “True Tour,”  sent a tweet out to his fans once he learned about what happened during his performance:
