The Musical of Musicals: The Musical! Now that is an enthusiastic title.
As you might have guessed by the art above and the name of the show itself, The Musical of Musicals is a parody that references all the Broadway greats. Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber are all quoted in this homage to the theater—or shall we call it the “theah-tah” for drama? There are references to Evita (“Don’t cry for me Argentina!”), Chicago (“He had it coming!”), The Sound of Music (“Fa—a long long way to ruuun!”), and more.
The Musical of Musicals first debuted off-Broadway in 2003, and in five acts highlights five different iconic composers’ and/or lyricists’ work centering around that oh-so-relatable chant, “I can’t pay the rent!” The show is both a parody and the ultimate homage to musical theater.
This month, Moonbox Productions will open its fifth season with The Musical of Musicals at the Boston Center for the Arts.
As part of each production, Moonbox sheds light on a local nonprofit. For The Musical of Musicals, their partner is YouthDesign, a Boston-area nonprofit that empowers urban youth in design.
