Oscar Nominations Are in and It’s Looking Great for Steve Carell

The entirety of awards season leads up to this day, and finally, after weeks of anticipation, the Oscar nominations were announced this morning in Los Angeles. While there are always snubs (Aniston, we’re all here for you), this year’s noms are pretty much exactly what most of the media predicted.

First and foremost, Steve Carell scored a nomination for his role in the dramatic boxing pic Foxcatcher. It’s so deserving; Carell’s grotesque and all-around horrifying transformation as John du Pont proved that he’s a also genius outside the comedy genre.

Among other uninspiring nominees are Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) for Actress in a Leading Role, Robert Duvall (The Judge) for Actor in a Supporting Role, Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel) for Directing, and Richard Linklater (Boyhood) for Original Screenplay. And we can’t forget that Meryl Streep was nominated for her supporting role in Into the Woods because what are the Oscars without a Streep nomination?

And finally, the Best Picture category, the biggest category, nominated just about every buzzed-about movie this year—Boyhood, Birdman, Selma—with one rather surprising addition: Whiplash managed to score a nod, a movie about a young jazz drummer starring Miles Teller. Yes, Miles Teller, the guy in that bro-y Zac Efron movie about drinking beers and avoiding real adult responsibilities.
