‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Coming to Boston for ‘Mandatory World Tour’

Just in case the New Kids on the Block aren’t up your alley, here’s another summer tour headed our way: just announced Tuesday morning, the one and only “Weird Al” Yankovic is going on a world tour this summer to promote his 2014 album Mandatory Fun.

Mandatory Fun, in case you were living under a rock last year, was wildly successful. You might say Weird Al pulled a bit of a Beyoncé with his promotional strategy. Rather than release a few singles for radio, he took a more unconventional route and released several music videos from the album during its debut week. “Word Crimes,” a parody of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” took the Internet by storm. Mandatory Fun became Weird Al’s first number 1 album in the United States.

Fun fact: Part of Mandatory Fun was recorded in Allston at Mad Oak Studios, where one-time-Harvard-busker-turned-punk-rock-star Amanda Palmer recorded vocals for the track “First World Problems.” Palmer was unable to travel to LA, so Yankovic worked with her via Skype as she tried to emulate Kim Deal’s sound from the Pixies.

The “Mandatory World Tour” will stop in Boston for two shows in June at the Wilbur Theatre. The promo teases it as “the greatest musical spectacle ever seen, invading a city near you. … Be there, it’s mandatory.”

Safe to say this tour will be tacky in the best way possible.
