Phillip Tang Hosting Pop-Up Series Inside East by Northeast

Chef Phillip Tang might have just wrapped up his last service at East by Northeast in Cambridge, but apparently his presence in the space is far from over. Today, Tang announced that he’s launching a series of pop-up dinners in his old digs with former Lumiere colleague Jitti Chaithiraphant, who was recently featured in Boston for his burgeoning fermentation brand, Heritage Vinegar.

Eight years after working side by side in Michael Leviton’s kitchen, the two friends are back together, celebrating Tang’s transition into his new role at The Gallows Group’s newest concept located inside the former Hamersley’s Bistro space.

The East by Northeast dinner series, called “Anticipation of Spring, will include a multi-course tasting menu that serves twelve to fourteen guests. Tang says he’s aiming to emulate the atmosphere of a casual dinner party, with patrons mingling and sharing space at a communal table.

“We want to encourage a casual atmosphere where guests can meet other food lovers and enjoy a fine dining tasting menu, without the formality and pretension associated with it,” Tang says via a press release. “We believe that a meal is best experienced shared in the company of others, with good food, drink, and conversation. We will start with hors d’oeuvres where you can meet the other guests, then sit down for roast lamb and other plates inspired by the hope of spring after this difficult winter.”

The first installment in Tang and Chaithiraphant’s pop-up series will take place on March 20, with two seatings, one at 5:30 p.m. and the other at 9 p.m. Future dinners on April 4 and 18 will follow the same format. In addition, the duo says they have another pop-up concept in the works, “Spring Summer Fall.”
