Best of the Day: Scooper Bowl – June 2, 2015

For its 33rd year, the Jimmy Fund’s all-you-can-eat ice cream extravaganza takes over City Hall Plaza, June 2-4.

Welcome to Best of the Day, our daily recommendation for what to check out around town. If you do one thing in Boston today, consider this.

Dairy must flow through the veins of New Englanders. It’s the only logical explanation for Chowderfest, our beloved, baffling tradition of eating hot cups of clams cooked in cream each July, despite the sweltering summer heat. Likewise, we’re equally incapable of resisting the temptation of ice cream, no matter how frigid the weather. Even in the dead of winter, our local ice cream parlors do a brisk cone business.

So you can imagine the sheer glee with which Boston embraces the return of the Scooper Bowl: the Jimmy Fund’s annual ice cream festival, which is coming to City Hall Plaza for its 33rd year. In the words of Jimmy Fund director Suzanne Fountain, “The Scooper Bowl is a rite of passage for summer.”

More than 50,000 people flock to the event, and for good reason. Not only is it an opportunity to sample dozens of flavors—fest organizers estimate they dish out roughly 20 tons of the sweet stuff each year—it’s also a way to raise funds for cancer research.

As per usual, flavors available to sample will range from classics like Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia, to more exotic fare like Hood’s Jelly Donut, to straight-up novelty flavors like Baskin-Robbins’s Snacknado, described as “salty-caramel-flavored ice cream loaded with chocolatey potato chips and pretzels swirled with candy pieces and chocolate fudge and salted pretzel flavored ribbons.”

Whew. Sounds like we’re going to need a bigger spoon.

$20 three-day pass, $10 adults, $5 children, free for children under three. The Scooper Bowl will take place on June 2, 12-8 p.m., June 3, 12-10 p.m., and June 4, 12-8 p.m., at City Hall Plaza. Passes sold at the event and at Walgreens stores. For more information, visit scooperbowl.org.
