BU Legend Jim Craig’s ‘Miracle on Ice’ Memorabilia Up for Auction

Do you believe in miracles? Better yet, how much are you willing to shell out for the pieces of one?
Legendary Boston University goaltender Jim Craig has put up for auction collection of memorabilia from the “Miracle on Ice,” Team USA’s improbable victory over the heavily favored Soviet juggernaut on their way to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Games. The Lake Placid showdown, which saw a handful of Massachusetts natives and BU alums lace up for the United States, was immortalized in Disney’s 2004 film Miracle.
If the price is right, the American flag famously draped over Craig’s shoulders after Team USA defeated Finland, as well as his 1980 Olympic gold medal, could be yours. New York-based auction house Lelands tried selling the collection last summer for $5.7 million, and has now placed the items on the auction block.
“I’m selling my ‘Miracle on Ice’ collection to ensure a healthy financial future for my children and grandchildren,” Craig said in a release. “I also plan to donate proceeds from the auction to charities and causes that are near and dear to my heart.”
The “Jim Craig ‘Miracle on Ice’ Collection” includes the Easton, Mass. native’s:
- 1980 Team USA uniform from the Soviet game
- 1980 Team USA jersey from the gold medal game
- Goalie mask worn throughout 1980 Winter Olympics
- 1980 Winter Olympics game-used goalie stick, skates, pants, blocker, and leg pads
- Levi’s jeans and dress outfit worn in the 1980 Winter Olympics opening ceremonies
- 1980 Winter Olympics sneakers and Levi Strauss warm-up pants worn during the gold medal ceremony
- 1980 Winter Olympics Team USA winter coat and jacket
- A stick signed by members of the 1980 Winter Olympics team
The auction went live May 17 and closes June 17.
