Wellesley High School Senior Inhales Pin on Her Way to Prom
Prom is a time to prop up your local limo bus economy, slow-dance to some Vitamin C, and have one final, communal chicken marsala with people you’ll hardly remember five years from now. It is not the time to be lodging needles in your bronchial tubes.
Wellesley High School senior Kathleen Garvey did just that on her way to Magic in the Moonlight, or Under the Sea, or Dancing Trump Fantasia, or whatever this year’s theme was. Struggling to affix a boutonniere to her boyfriend Colin Emerson, Garvey placed the pin in her mouth. Emerson made a joke and Garvey laughed, inhaling the pin.
“I was scared the pin was there and I said ‘Oh my god did you swallow it?’, and she said, ‘I don’t know’,” Emerson told WHDH.
Garvey said she felt no pain, and didn’t go to the hospital until the next morning, where a doctor was shocked to find the pin chilling in her bronchial tubes. After a 45-minute surgery, Garvey was pin-free and ready to hear “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” a few dozen times before summer’s end.
