Matthew McConaughey Wanders Around a Massachusetts Forest in Sea of Trees Trailer
Fans got their first look at Matthew McConaughey wandering around a Massachusetts forest in the first trailer for Sea of Trees, which debuted online this week.
The film features McConaughey as a distraught American professor named Arthur Brennan, who travels to Japan in order to commit suicide at the infamous Sea of Trees forest near Mount Fuji. While on his quest, Brennan forms a life-changing friendship with Ken Watanabe’s character Takumi, a stranger who is making the same dark trek through the woods.
Before production finished up in Japan, Sea of Trees shot several scenes around the Bay State in 2014, including at the F. Gilbert Hills State Forest in Foxboro. According to publicist Gregg Brilliant, the film takes place in both Japan and the northeast of the U.S., so it’s bit unclear as to whether the local flora serves as a stand in for the Sea of Trees or if it will be featured in separate, stateside scenes.
The latest movie by Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant hasn’t been getting a lot of love from critics, who booed the drama during a screening at the Cannes Film Festival last year. It will be interesting to see if audiences have the same reaction when it premieres in the U.S. this month.
Sea of Trees, which also stars Naomi Watts and Katie Aselton, hits theaters on August 26.
