12 Gyms Opening in Boston This Year
If you’re already wading through wall-to-wall crowds at the gym this New Year’s resolution season, don’t despair. We found 12 gyms and studios opening in 2017, promising new places to sweat long after the January rush is over. Mark your calendars.
What to expect: The so-called “best workout in the world” involves punishing treadmill drills, interspersed with strength training and core work. The new location, the second in the Boston area, will also have a juice, smoothie, and snack bar.
Where it’s heading: The Street at Chestnut Hill.
When it’s opening: Opening date TBD.
What to expect: Pay-as-you-go indoor cycling classes with top-notch playlists and instructors.
Where it’s heading: The ‘burbs—50 Central Street in Wellesley.
When it’s opening: February 2017.
What to expect: The local mini-chain’s latest studios will offer its signature reformer Pilates classes, on the latest Pilates Megaformer machines.
Where it’s heading: There are two BTones on the way, one in South Boston and one at the Street at Chestnut Hill.
When it’s opening: Southie will open in February, followed by Chestnut Hill in summer or fall 2017.
What to expect: George Foreman III’s latest gym will offer the high-intensity, boxing-inspired classes made popular by its Seaport flagship.
Where it’s heading: One Federal Street, in the Financial District.
When it opens: February 2017.
What to expect: The reigning king of luxury gyms, Equinox boasts top-notch group fitness classes and equipment, personal trainers, a spa, and perhaps the nicest locker rooms ever.
Where it’s heading: The Seaport, at 80 Seaport Boulevard.
When it opens: Fall 2017, likely in September.
What to expect: In short: a lot. This soon-to-come fitness concept will house five—five!—boutique studios under one roof. Title Boxing Club and Orangetheory Fitness have already signed on, and the development is looking for three other studio partners.
Where it’s heading: Somerville’s Assembly Row complex.
When it opens: Spring 2017.
What to expect: Just like its Beacon Hill studio, the new HYL will offer a full schedule of yoga classes, many with an emphasis on meditation.
Where it’s heading: 181 Massachusetts Avenue, in Kendall Square.
When it opens: January 2017.
What to expect: A luxury gym that may just rival Equinox. The new location, joining Framingham and Westwood, promises seven group fitness studios, 400 exercise machines, a medical center, a spa, a café, and a kids’ club.
Where it’s heading: Chestnut Hill, at 335 Boylston Street.
When it opens: Spring 2017.
What to expect: High-intensity bootcamp classes utilizing treadmills, rowing machines, weights, and heart rate monitors.
Where it’s heading: In addition to FitRow (see above), Orangetheory is setting up shop in the Back Bay, at 10 Saint James Avenue. A Kendall Square studio just opened as well.
When it opens: Early 2017.
What to expect: The candlelit indoor cycling classes that have made SoulCycle a fan favorite, both in Boston and nationwide.
Where it’s heading: The Seaport, at 111 Seaport Boulevard.
When it opens: March 2017.
What to expect: Yoga classes in a variety of styles, plus a “Great Yoga Wall” equipped with resistance bands and a ballet barre.
Where it’s heading: The Street at Chestnut Hill.
When it opens: January 2017.
