Manchester by the Sea may have fell just short of the top prize at the 2017 Golden Globes, but that didn’t stop Boston’s stars from having fun on Sunday night.

Although the Bay State film was edged out in the best motion picture, drama category by Moonlight, star Casey Affleck was still able to earn a trophy for best actor in a drama. His big brother Ben and pal Matt Damon were also in attendance at this year’s ceremony, as they tried their best to enjoy presenter duties.

Damon used his time on stage to poke fun at his odd Golden Globe win in 2016 for best actor in a comedy or musical category, which he won for his starring role in The Martian.

The critically acclaimed musical La La Land may have had the biggest evening out of all the nominated films, earning a total of seven awards. The production was named the best motion picture, comedy or musical, while stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone were honored as the best actor and actress in a comedy or musical.

Gosling gave a heartfelt message to his wife Eva Mendes during his acceptance speech, thanking her for the support as well as praising her for being strong while her brother dealt with cancer.

“While I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer,” Gosling said. “If she hadn’t had taken all that on so that I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up here other than me today. So sweetheart, thank you.”

Meryl Streep, who was honored with the Cecil B. Demille lifetime achievement award, used her acceptance speech to make a powerful statement about President-elect Donald Trump. The decorated actress revealed that she’s still distraught over Trump’s imitation of a disabled reporter.

“It kind of broke my heart when I saw it,” Streep said. “I still can’t get it out my head because it wasn’t in a movie; it was in real life. That instinct to humiliate when it’s modeled by someone in a public platform, it filters down into everyone’s life because it gives permission for others to do the same.”
