Ed Markey Just Can’t Stop Voting for Trump’s Cabinet Picks

Just two days after appearing at the demonstration in Copley Square protesting President Donald Trump’s Muslim travel ban, Sen. Ed Markey cast the latest in a series of votes in favor of Trump’s Cabinet picks.
The full Senate took up a vote on Trump’s choice for transportation secretary, Harvard benefactor and former labor secretary Elaine Chao. Just six Democrats voted against Chao, who is married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Elizabeth Warren, along with Bernie Sanders and Kirsten Gillibrand, voted against Chao. Markey did not.

In committee, Markey voted both in favor of Chao, as well as Wilbur Ross, the billionaire investor tapped by Trump to lead the Department of Commerce. Ross was the owner of the Sago coal mine when it collapsed in 2006, killing all but one of the 13 miners trapped inside. The mine’s roof had collapsed 20 times the year prior, receiving more than 200 safety violations from federal regulators, which Ross admitted he was aware of.
Previously, both Markey and Warren voted to confirm retired Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis as defense secretary. Markey also voted in favor of retired Gen. John F. Kelly as head of the Department of Homeland Security, the government agency tasked with carrying out Trump’s orders on immigration.
