Burro Bar Is Now Open in the South End

What’s behind the magenta door? Why, it’s a second location of the Alpine Restaurant Group’s Burro Bar, of course. It quietly opened last night on Washington Street in the South End, and per the Instagram announcement, we can’t help but notice the entrance is painted the same shade of pink as its Brookline sister spot’s.

Burro Bar is the Alpine Group’s sixth restaurant, a neighborhood taqueria and tequila bar and a fun-loving sibling to the Painted Burro in Davis Square. The company also owns Posto, the Rosebud American Kitchen & Bar, and Osteria Posto in Waltham.

Chef Joe Casinelli’s menu of tacos, quesos fundido, ceviches, and more shows glimpses Baja, Oaxacan, Veracruz, and Yucatan influence, along with creative Latin American flourishes and New England seasonality. It ranges from appetizers to entrees, including dishes like a guajillo lamb barbacoa tamal; spring peas and ramps queso fundido with poblano mole; and lobster enchiladas. The bar is stocked with more than 100 different types of tequila and mezcal, accessible via one- or two-ounce shots and a range of craft margaritas. Director of operations Alec Riveros has also created cocktails with vodka, rum, and other non-agave spirits, and a solid list of cervezas and wines.

Formerly La Motta’s Italian restaurant, the new owners spruced up the 107-seat space with bright blue paint, new furniture, and art by local artist Raul Gonzalez III, who also decorated the Painted Burro and Burro Bar Brookline. The South End spot has a 25-seat bar, and 24 seats outside, as well.

Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, it’s open daily for dinner from 4-11 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 5-11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Burro Bar South End will start weekend brunch in the near future—stay tuned.
