At DBar, ‘Chic-2B-gAy’ Is Here to Stay

Dorchester hotspot dbar has been buzzing this week with its new fried chicken dish, ‘Chic-2B-gAy.’ Built around the inspired message ‘Supporting the right to love is always in great taste,’ the dish is a hefty serving of comfort food: a boneless fried chicken entrée accompanied with a homemade biscuit, mashed potatoes, gravy, and coleslaw.

With its tongue-in-cheek response to the growing controversy surrounding Atlanta-based food chain Chick-fil-A, the LGBT owned-and-operated dbar has joined the likes of Mayor Menino in speaking out Chik-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy’s recent LGBT-intolerant statements.

With Chick-fil-A and its CEO Dan Cathy making headlines, dbar owner and activist Brian Piccini wanted to counter the hate with some good old-fashioned love. “There’s been all this crazy chicken press lately, so I thought [that] maybe we can do something to make a positive message,” says Piccini. “From there came [the message] ‘Supporting the right to love is always in great taste.’”

What started as a weekend-long promotion has quickly blossomed into a menu mainstay, so long as sales and support stay strong. Last Friday alone, dbar dished out 35 orders of ‘Chic-2B-gAy,’ and the weekend continued with solid numbers on Saturday and Sunday.

At $19 a pop, Piccini is donating 100% of the dish’s proceeds to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). This high-profile organization is the nation’s leader in working through the media to build support for equality.

With such a worthy cause in mind, head to dbar this weekend to lend your support—and enjoy some fried chicken and biscuits in the process.
