Three New Non-Invasive Cosmetic Procedures To Try Now
As a plastic surgeon, I’m often asked about non-invasive cosmetic procedures, which do not involve anesthesia or a trip to a hospital or surgical center. These procedures usually only include work done at the “skin level.”
Well, I’m happy to report that there are three, new non-invasive approaches to cellulite, fat deposits, and underarm sweating that I believe can make a difference for patients. These treatments require relatively little downtime, and are all in-office treatments that are usually finished within a couple of hours.
It is important to note that non-invasive procedures are not quick fixes or miracle treatments that can take the place of a healthy diet and exercise. Surgery will still always have a role, however, before you head to the operating room, I think there are some great alternatives.
Below, my picks for the coolest new treatments:
Cellfina: Cellfina is set to launch this fall for the treatment of cellulite. It uses small needles that release the tethering or bands that cause the dimpling appearance. The procedure will be used to treat cellulite dimples on the buttocks and upper outer thighs. The pilot work for this new treatment was performed here in Boston. Dr. Michael Kaminer, a dermatologist at SkinCare Physicians in Chestnut Hill, was involved from the beginning and contributed to the background work over the last six years. He and his colleagues performed two FDA trials that resulted in FDA approval for long term improvement of cellulite with greater than a 98 percent efficacy in clinical trials. The coolest part is that this may be a single session treatment. That said, it’ll cost you: It could range anywhere between $2,500 to $4,000.
Coolsculpting: Also pioneered here in Boston, Coolsculpting was created at the Wellman Center of Photomedicine at Mass General by Dr. Richard Rox Anderson. This technique can produce liposuction-like results in selected patients. The treatment uses “controlled cooling” at the sites of treatment to reduce fat collections. During treatment, patients will feel a cooling sensation at the treated areas. Once the areas are cooled during the treatment the fat cells are absorbed by the body and do not return. Plus, side effects are mild. Coolsculpting is used to treat the tummy, upper ab area, and the inner and outer thighs. Coolsculpting will usually take just one or two treatments for most patients. The results are long-lasting, and most likely permanent. The average total price per treatment is approximately $1,500 to $2,000.
MiraDry: This is a non-invasive treatment and potentially life-changing solution for people with severe underarm sweating, and results can last for least several years. The treatment uses electromagnetic energy, which is applied directly to the area. MiraDry is the only non-invasive device that is FDA approved to treat underarm sweating. This procedure usually involves two treatments performed about three months apart. The total cost for the two treatments is around $3,500. Although Botox is a popular non-invasive treatment for underarm sweating, the effects of Botox in reducing sweating is limited to six to eight months. I believe MiraDry is a more permanent, longer-lasting solution to significant underarm sweating.
