Hats Off to Salmagundi in the North End

Jamaica Plain hat and accessories boutique Salmagundi opened its second location in the North End today.

Husband-and-wife owners Jessen Fitzpatrick and Andria Rapagnola are no strangers to the neighborhood. Eleven years ago, they were married up the street from the store, and Andria’s grandmother grew up next door. As a child, Andria spent her weekends lounging on a nearby fire escape. They’ve wanted to set up shop in the North End for some time: “This was where I felt excited, ” Jessen says. “I just felt this energy.”

The 570-square-foot space boasts between 4,500 and 5,000 hats, many of which are custom-designed for the store. Over the past three-and-a-half months, Jessen and Andria have transformed the modern ambiance of the previous tenant—home store Acquire—into something cozier. “We try to always make it feel residential,” Andria says. Furniture from the 1930s to the 1960s, wooden doors from the early 20th century, and wrought iron details add to the eclectic, vintage feel.

But the vibe isn’t the only thing the Jamaica Plain and North End Salmagundis will share: employees will float back and forth between the two shops, too. “It will be like you went through the secret door at Salmagundi in JP and came out here,” Jessen says.
