Yuengling Ice Cream Now Available in Boston
During Prohibition, America’s breweries were forced to explore all manner of alternative products in order to survive. Coors produced malted milk for the Mars candy company, Pabst transitioned into cheese making, and Anheuser-Busch crafted a breakfast cereal called Bevo. Yuengling, the country’s oldest brewery, turned to ice cream.
Yuengling Dairy Products ceased production of its ice cream line back in 1985, but after a 28-year hiatus, the family has brought it back. Operated separately from the brewery by David Yuengling, founder Frank Yuengling’s grandson, the ice cream can now be found in several states throughout the Northeast, including Massachusetts.
Produced by Leiby’s Dairy in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, Yuengling’s Ice Cream is now available in 10 flavors including espresso chocolate chip, root beer float, vanilla fudge chunk with pretzels, and a special holiday peppermint crunch. The company has quietly rolled out the product in area Wegmans grocery stores and will look to expand production in 2015. The cost of Yuengling’s Ice Cream is between $5.49 and $5.99 per quart. Sadly, despite flavors like “Black and Tan,” there is no beer in any of their dairy products.
