Boston Marathon Survivors and Newlyweds Announce Split

Almost a year after walking down the aisle, Rebekah Gregory and Pete DiMartino, Boston Marathon bombing survivors whose romance unfolded in the public eye, have decided to separate.

Gregory and DiMartino’s uplifting story made national headlines last February when TheKnot.com sponsored their dream wedding. They’ve been together since November 2012, and appeared on Ellen last February. Gregory gave specifics on the status of their relationship to People.com:

“While my heart is beyond broken, I have a certain peace knowing from day one, I truly gave it my all, and have been fully invested in keeping this marriage, and my commitment before God. I still love Pete with all of my heart and ask that everyone respect our privacy as we try to figure out our next steps. As for now, I am focused on doing what I feel is best for my son and I, and will concentrate my time on healing, both physically and emotionally.”

Both Gregory and DiMartino were standing at the finish line on Boylston at the 2013 Boston Marathon when the two bombs went off. Gregory lost the majority of her left leg, and it was amputated last year after undergoing 17 surgeries. DiMartino suffered a ruptured eardrum and lost the majority of his Achilles tendon.

After speaking with People.com, Gregory followed up with statement on her Facebook.

“And as you are all aware, a very private issue in my life was thrown into the media this week, that forced me to release a statement that I wasn’t quite ready to make,” she wrote. “And as a result, it has been harder than the bomb, surgeries, amputation, rehab etc. all rolled into one. But my life doesn’t stop. I will keep moving forward because giving up is not an option and I still despite everything, believe in a bigger plan.”
