Six New Food Trucks Hitting Boston Streets

Rami's revival, Hawaiian-inspired cuisine, a Tasty Burger on wheels, and more.

Nobody was hit harder by last winter’s brutal storms than Boston’s food truck industry, but after months of repairs, and general hibernation, these beacons for better lunch and late-night cravings are back on the street. Even more enticing? Joining the Mei Mei’s, Roxy’s, and Bon Me’s of the world, are fresh new faces showcasing all kinds of interesting fare. In 2015, you can find newcomers hawking everything from kosher wraps to Hawaiian curries to banh mi sandwiches stuffed with Korean bulgogi and meatloaf. Below, check out six of the food trucks we’re most excited to see at the Greenway, SoWa Market, and all the busiest thoroughfares around Boston.

Rami’s Food Truck

Last fall, Rami’s Food Truck opened a streamlined version of Haim Cohen’s Brookline brick and mortar, but were derailed on the first day when a mechanical failure caused the truck to catch fire. Now, after a six-month hiatus, Rami’s plans to return to Boston’s streets following the last day of Passover. Starting April 13, you’ll finally be able to find Rami’s “build-your-own” kosher meals, available on either a pita or plate with protein options such as falafel, tuna, shawarma, or schnitzel. In addition, Kendall and Pultman will be adding some of the same cold pressed juices options that are soon to be introduced at the original brick and mortar. Catch them on Sundays at Clarendon Street, Mondays at City Hall Plaza, Stuart Street on Wednesdays, and Thursdays in Chinatown.

Saigon Alley

Saigon Alley serves up classic Vietnamese dishes prepared by husband and wife duo Evan Englehart and Ly Tran Hong Ngoc (Ruby Englehart), whose shared love of Ngoc’s hometown pushed the passionate home cooks to purchase a food truck last December. Expect traditional dishes like Pho, banh mi sandwiches, and bolgogi beef noodles, as well more experimental offerings like the popular Bahn (Mi)tloaf. Later this spring, Saigon Alley plans to introduce more salads, iced drinks, and summer rolls to complement (hopefully) the warmer weather. Try them out at Boston Medical Center on Mondays, Northeastern University at Opera Place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays at Copley Square, or Fridays at Post Office Square.

Tasty Burger

Once relegated to private parties and charitable events, Tasty Burger has finally decided to unleash its dedicated food truck full-time this spring. Starting April 2, you can find Tasty’s mobile restaurant serving an abbreviated menu of burgers (original, spicy jalapeno, bacon cheeseburger, and mushroom), dogs (quarter-pound “shafts” and Fenway Park sausages), chili, and tots (we recommend them with spicy cheese sauce) around Boston. Permanent spots will include Government Center Plaza on Thursdays (11 a.m.-3 p.m.), Stuart Street between Trinity and Dartmouth Street on Fridays (3 p.m.-midnight), and Saturdays at Peter Park in the South End.

Lilo’s Plates

Sean Chen, Frederick Chen, Jack Lee, and Jenny Giang’s Hawaiian-inspired food truck is slated to introduce its brand of tropical-spun cuisine later this month. Lilo’s Plates will launch with a succinct menu of three main dishes: the sweet Big Island curry, the Loco Moco (a gravy-smothered Japanese burger patty served over rice with a fried egg), and the Big Island vegetable curry, featuring a rotating assortment of seasonal, locally-sourced vegetables. The truck will also boast rotating daily specials like Spam musubi (think nigiri, but with Spam). Find them on Mondays at Boston Medical Center, Tuesdays at Commander’s Mansion in Watertown, Wednesdays at AthenaHealth in Watertown, Thursdays at Dewey Square, Thursdays and Fridays by the Back Bay T Station.

Copper Dome Crust

Mother and son team Maria and James Fodera have found a way to bring a traditional pizzeria experience right to your doorstep. Copper Dome Crust’s eponymous copper-plated oven, pulled from behind a truck like a horse-drawn carriage, just got off the ground at the end of last year. Last seen at Night Shift Brewery and other pop-up stops around town, the venture features family recipes and wholesome, locally-sourced ingredients. Copper Dome’s menu is centered around customizable pies, but they also feature popular house specialities like a chicken pesto pizza with ricotta and white sauce, a prosciutto and arugula pizza drizzled with balsamic glaze, and for dessert, an addictive apple pie pizza.

North East of the Border

Beginning April 1, Chris Wandell and Gustavo Lecanda will take North East of the Border, a Mexican-style food truck, out onto the street. The two plan to craft an authentic menu that steers clear of typical “Tex-Mex” options, using locally-sourced and organic ingredients whenever possible. Expect Mexican street tacos, made with carnitas or fish, a selection of torta sandwiches, tamales, and even breakfast options. Find them on Mondays at Rowes Wharf Plaza at High Street and Tuesdays and Thursdays at Dewey Park Plaza.
