These 1975 Red Sox Throwbacks are a Thing of Beauty
For the first time since the Bobby Valentine era, the Red Sox will wears throwback uniforms against the Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday night. But rather than dialing it back to the deadball 1912 team, Boston will don the duds of a team with a little more dramatic flair: the American League champion 1975 Red Sox.
“At a time when baseball was said to be in a slump, the 1975 team and World Series brought baseball back in full luster,” president Larry Lucchino said in a release. “This team was responsible for inspiring a generation of late-blooming baby boomers to fall in love with the game, and for creating one of the most dramatic moments in Red Sox history, and baseball history, with Carlton Fisk’s home run.”
Fisk’s walk-off home run, immortalized by Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting, forced a Game 7 against the powerhouse Cincinnati Reds, who would eventually take the series. As the ball sailed toward the Green Monster, Fisk frantically waved his arms, magically coaxing the ball fair. The 1975 World Series is still considered one of the most electrifying Fall Classics ever played, and you can watch Game 6 in its entirety on YouTube.
Judging by the photo the Red Sox tweeted Friday, we can expect red caps, a Massachusetts Bicentennial patch on the left sleeve, and an elastic waistband in place of a belt. One can only hope stirrups are made mandatory, as well.
Members of the 1975 expected to take part in a pregame ceremony include: Tim Blackwell, Rick Burleson, Bernie Carbo, Reggie Cleveland, Cecil Cooper, Steve Dillard, Denny Doyle, Dick Drago, Dwight Evans, Carlton Fisk, Bob Heise, Buddy Hunter, Rick Kreuger, Bill Lee, Fred Lynn, Tim McCarver, Andy Merchant, Rick Miller, Bob Montgomery, Roger Moret, Jim Rice, Diego Segui, Luis Tiant, Jim Willoughby, Rick Wise, and Carl Yastrzemski.
Fan will also receive a Fisk bobblehead, the first of three paying tribute to the 1975 team. On May 21, the Sox will give away Tiant bobbleheads–presumably with iconic ‘stache–and on September 22, Lynn bobbleheads.
