Best of the Day: Oktoberfest at Olde Magoun’s Saloon – September 2, 2015

Today, Oktoberfest comes to Somerville. And whether that harbinger of autumn makes you smile or wince, you can find comfort in a stein of Märzen and a plate of Kartoffelpuffer.

Over at Olde Magoun’s Saloon, they’re celebrating this German holiday all month long. Today, they’re launching their Oktoberfestivities with ceremonial keg-tapping. You’ll be able to quaff these German beers (which they’re serving in proper traditional glassware, natch):

  • Paulaner Oktoberfest Wiesn and Märzen
  • Hacker-Pschorr
  • Hofbrau
  • Spaten
  • Weihenstephan
  • Ayinger
  • Warsteiner
  • Würzburger Hofbräu
  • Traunstein (which will be switched out for Andechs in October)

Pair those brews with a traditional Oktoberfest menu, which Olde Magoun’s is serving every Wednesday evening from now until October (they’re also doing a German-inspired roast dinners on Sundays). Here’s what’s on the menu:

Obatzda
House-made Bavarian cheese spread, served with country-style bread.

Kartoffelpuffer
Potato pancakes with rustic applesauce, sour cream, and chives.

Reuben Knockwurst
Split knockwurst and ale-braised sauerkraut, with Swiss cheese, Thousand Island dressing, and warm German potato salad with marble rye.

Paprika Schnitzel
Pork cutlets with paprika gravy, pretzel spaetzle, and cider-glazed cabbage.

Haus Wurst Plate
Bratwurst, knockwurst, and weisswurst, with ale-braised sauerkraut and warm German potato salad.

Schweinbraten
Roast pork loin with spaetzle, brussels sprouts, and rosemary cider jus.

Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte
Chocolate layer cake with kirsch liqueur, cherries, and whipped cream.

On Saturday, September 19, they’re celebrating the official launch of Oktoberfest in Germany with an all-day party, which starts bright and early at 9:30 a.m. with a screening of a Fußball match, followed by the official celebration kickoff at noon.
