John Farrell’s Cancer Is in Remission

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell is winning his battle with cancer.
The Red Sox announced on Thursday that Farrell’s post-treatment tests at Massachusetts General Hospital showed his stage 1 Non-Hodgkin’s Burkitt lymphoma is in remission. Farrell has been undergoing cancer treatment since he was diagnosed in August after hernia surgery.
Farrell received the results of his test on Wednesday.
“I am extremely thankful for the outpouring of support I have received from the Red Sox, my family, friends, and fans throughout this process. I am also especially thankful for the talented doctors who cared for me in Detroit and here at MGH. I look forward to getting back to work and bringing another championship back to Boston,” said Farrell in a written statement.
Red Sox President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski said the organization is over the moon about the good news.
“We are thrilled to hear the great news about John today. Foremost, we are extremely happy for him and his family, knowing what he has gone through over the past two months. We all admire him for his strength and courage, and look forward to having him back as our manager,” said Dombrowski.
Farrell left the team not long after his diagnosis this summer and was replaced on an interim basis by bench coach Torey Lovullo for the remainder of the season. On October 4, the Red Sox announced Farrell will return to the team in his role as manager next spring.
Farrell led the Red Sox to the 2013 World Series championship but has somehow earned a .499 record with consecutive last place finishes in 2014 and 2015. Prior to joining the Red Sox, Farrell was the manager for the Toronto Blue Jays where he was in charge of an exciting young team that remained competitive in baseball’s toughest division.
