‘Suspicious Item’ Found in Auburn Child’s Chocolate Bar a Hoax, Police Say

Two days after a 14-year-old girl in Ohio reportedly found a razor blade in her Snickers, police in Auburn, Massachusetts received word of a “suspicious item” in a Hersey’s chocolate bar.

Police said they received a report of tampered candy from a resident in the Chestnut Avenue area in Auburn. A 1-inch, metallic object was found under the wrapper of a Hershey’s miniature chocolate bar, which was partially opened when the child received it, police said. 

“We believe this is an isolated incident,” Auburn Police posted on Facebook Saturday night, “but we are encouraging parents whose children may have ‘trick or treeted’ [sic] in this area to diligently and thoroughly check any candy their children received.”

By the next morning, police discovered the “suspicious item,” which bears close resemblance to a razor blade, was a hoax.

“As the investigation into the tampered Halloween candy continued, APD Detectives were able to speak with the 11 year old who originally reported the item in her candy,” Auburn Police posted. “After interviewing her along with her mother, it has been determined that the entire story was a fabrication created by the child.”
