Stoked Pizza Opening Shop in Washington Square
UPDATE, January 6, 2:30 p.m.: Sunny Boy is now closed, Boston Restaurant Talk reports.
PREVIOUSLY:
As first reported by Eater Boston last week, Stoked Pizza will be opening their first brick and mortar restaurant in Brookline in spring 2016. What was less clear (until now) was the whereabouts of their debut outing. Now Stoked owners Scott Riebling and Toirm Miller have confirmed that they’re taking over the space currently occupied by Sunny Boy in Washington Square.
After scouting locations throughout the Somerville area, Miller says they decided upon Brookline because “Washington Square is already a restaurant destination with Publick House, Washington Square Tavern, and Ribelle. But nobody is doing what we’ll be doing. This is going to be a completely unique concept for the area.”
Along with an expanded selection of wood-fired pizzas, Riebling says they will also have a selection of 4-5 sandwiches, salads, and appetizers. Although the duo is currently in the process of developing a complete menu, they’ve shared a couple items they’re working on. These include a sous vide crispy calabrian roast pork sandwich with a spicy sweet sauce and homemade pickles; smoked cheddar and cream cheese stuffed mini peppers; an oyster mushroom po’ boy sandwich; and brunch dishes such as house-made bagels, cornmeal spiked pancakes with a lemon ricotta whip, and bananas foster French toast.
This is the second bit of bad news from the BiNA Hospitality Group and Babak Bina (JM Curley and Bogie’s Place, Lala Rokh, Bin 26 Enoteca) who opened Sunny Boy just last summer. Last week, on December 16, Bina was forced to shutter Merrill & Co. after launching two different, short-lived concepts within the South End space. Most recently, Bina announced Truck & Mortar at Merrill & Co., which invited food truck operators to take over the kitchen at irregular intervals. Now the real estate is being developed into Akinto, a Southeast Asian restaurant helmed by chef Patrick Enage and Boston Nightlife Venutres (Wink & Nod).
Stoked is expecting a quick turnaround on revamping the former Sunny Boy space and are targeting an April 1 opening date. They will be serving lunch and dinner daily and plan on rolling out brunch service soon after.
