Snow Report: The El Niño Pass Is Here

Did that brief warm spell combined with rain get you down on Sunday? Don’t worry too much, because there’s some snow in the short and longterm forecast both here, and, more importantly, up north. Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing into next week throughout ski country, so that’s a big shot in the arm for all the hard working snowmakers. Some parts of northern Maine are expecting over 6-10 inches of snow tonight. Parts of central New Hampshire are looking at 3-5 inches of the white stuff tonight.
Waterville Valley El Niño Pass
The unseasonably warm weather this winter has prompted Waterville Valley to offer a special season pass to skiers discouraged by the slow start. The El Niño Pass from Waterville Valley comes with 10 unrestricted lift tickets for the remainder of the 2016 season and costs $469 for adults and $369 for kids. If you ski all ten days, it’s just $25 for each additional lift ticket. If you do the math, you need only ski six times at Waterville this season before the pass is paid for.
We’re looking for other mountains offering this kind of deal, but have not found any. If you see a resort offering some kind of warm weather deal, please send it our way.
Cost of Maine lift tickets up slightly
The good folks at NewEnglandSkiIndustry.com crunched the numbers and found that the average lift ticket price in Maine is up four percent this season. The typical non-weekday lift ticket in Maine costs $50 a piece for the first time. It should be no surprise that Sugarloaf and Sunday River lead the way as the most expensive resorts in Maine with lift ticket prices of $86 and $89, respectively. Big Squaw is the cheapest, with $25 lift tickets. The four percent increase across is Maine is in line with lift ticket prices across the region: New Hampshire saw an increase of three percent while Vermont saw a four percent uptick in lift ticket prices. Only two resorts have topped the $100 lift ticket level: Stowe and Stratton.
