Video Spotlight: Rann Debuts ‘Falling’ Before Heading to SXSW

For young bands, there are no greater elements essential to success than having great songs and a great live show. The rest is just static.

For Brooklyn-based psychedelic-leaning pop-rock band Rann, combining the two was a no-brainer. Last fall the quintet—who all studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston before relocating down Interstate 95—released their debut album, Yellowgun, a nine-track record that was an impressive look (and sound) after only forming back in May. And now this week they have unveiled a video for the track “Falling,” shot at New York’s IIWII Studios. The clip showcases the band in their natural habitat: the stage.

“The idea for the video came from the fact that we simply didn’t have a good quality video that represented the band’s live performance capabilities accurately,” says guitarist Andre Vasconcelos. “We played so many shows but all we had were bootleg-ish videos, and we needed a good business card type video to spread the word on our live performances. So we chose our favorite studio near to us, IIWII Studios, to do it. We are very happy with how it looks and sounds. Engineers Billy Perez and assistant engineer Edu Marson did a fantastic job capturing the music, our drummer Joe Ulmer mixed it. For the video crew, the boys from Midnight Treehouse were just great, very easy to work with while delivering a great product.”

“Falling” was the first song written by the band back in December 2014, when the five musicians rented a house in upstate New York to jam out and craft new sounds for a studio project. “It was truly an amazing experience, we were in a gorgeous isolated cabin playing, living and breathing music the entire day,” Vasconcelos adds. “We did that for a whole month and jumped right into the studio to track the songs that are now on our debut album Yellowgun. As for “Falling,” he says: “We like the quirky and odd vibe that it has while still maintaining the strong pop pulse to it.”
