With a fare increase looming, MBTA riders can expect to pay $84.50 for a monthly Link pass, starting in July. For commuters on a budget—or anyone irritated by the MBTA’s shoddy service—that price stings.

On behalf of those seriously considering an informal MBTA boycott, we took the liberty of mapping some heavily traveled commuting routes, to see how many calories you’d burn if you swapped your morning T trip for a walk or bike ride.* Sure, finding an extra hour and 41 minutes to take a leisurely stroll from Cleveland Circle to State Street isn’t exactly convenient—but, then again, neither is idling at Kenmore for an inexplicable 15 minutes on the way to work.
