Jake Gyllenhaal’s Stronger Begins Production in Boston This Week
Lionsgate announced on Tuesday that production on Jake Gyllenhaal’s Stronger will begin this week in Boston.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Gyllenhaal would both produce and star in the film, which is based on the memoir of Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman. The Academy Award-nominated actor will play Bauman in the movie, while Golden Globe-nominated actress Tatiana Maslany will play his girlfriend Erin Hurley.
Rounding out the cast are Oscar-nomianted actress Miranda Richardson and actor Clancy Brown, who will play Bauman’s mother and father, respectively.
Gyllenhaal has been spotted around the Boston-area quite a bit over the past few weeks. According to People, he was recently seen working out at Jamaica Pond and at SoulCycle in the Back Bay.
According to a press release, the film “is the deeply personal account” of Bauman’s “heroic journey” that will follow “a man’s inner courage, a community’s pride, a family’s bond, and an unexpectedly tenacious love.”
Stronger is being directed by David Gordon Green, who’s previously helmed films such as George Washington and Pineapple Express. The screenplay was penned by Boston local John Pollon and is based on the New York Times bestselling book of the same title by Bauman and Bret Witter.
This isn’t the only Boston Marathon bombing movie that’s filming in Boston this spring.
Patriots Day, which is being produced by Mark Wahlberg, has been shooting in town over the past few weeks. Wahlberg is playing a composite character based on members of the Boston Police Department while Michelle Monaghan will play his character’s wife.
The project also has cast Alex Wolff and Themo Melikidze as the Tsarnaev brothers. Other notable cast members for Patriots Day include J.K. Simmons, Kevin Bacon, John Goodman, Vincent Curatola, James Colby, and Jimmy O. Yang.
Stronger has not set a release date while Patriots Day will hit theaters in Boston on December 21.
