Amid Loss, a Cow Finds a Friend

Just when you thought you’d had enough animal news for one week (ahem—that cloud of crabs, the stretch of seals, the truckload of cats and dogs), we present one more story. A story about cows, pigs, and friendship.

Things start off sadly for a blind cow in Dartmouth named Baby. Baby, who lives at an animal sanctuary called Don’t Forget Us Pet Us, recently lost her best friend of eight years—a pig named Lulu. Baby had been quite heartbroken…until fate intervened.

According to the Associated Press, an unnamed calf escaped from its home at Robin’s Livestock. It spent several days on the loose before being returned back to the farm, where it ultimately would have ended up at the slaughterhouse. That’s when a woman named Jean Briggs stepped in. A friend of the animal sanctuary, she used her tax refund to buy the calf from the farm when she heard its story. With her wallet $450 lighter, she gave the calf to Don’t Forget Us Pet Us.

Fortunately for Baby, the new calf was a remedy for her heartbreak. The two have become best friends since its arrival. Don’t Forget Us Pet Us owner Deborah Devlin told the AP that the timing is perfect. Their friendship is blossoming, but Lulu’s memory lives on.
