A Crane Beach Pop-Up Installation Is Coming to Boston

It may be beach season in Massachusetts, but not all of us can make it to the shore this weekend.

If you can’t abscond to a seaside getaway, let the beach come to you instead. The Trustees, a nonprofit conservation organization, is bringing a mini-version of Crane Beach to Boston for a special pop-up event on Saturday, June 18.

Designed by local landscape architect Ray Dunetz, the installation will include a 500 square foot display of beach images that are printed on semi-transparent fabric, real sand, sea grass, as well as a salvaged row boat and boardwalk. The Trustees are encouraging people to swing by to take a selfie or to learn more about the organization’s preservations efforts.

“While there is no substitute from the real thing, we hope that Boston residents can take a break out of their day and ‘go to the beach’ virtually, even for a few minutes,” Trustees president and CEO Barbara Erickson said in a statement. “We also hope these pop-ups will inspire more people to get out of the city this summer and explore some of our beautiful beaches, gardens, campgrounds, historic homes, farms, hiking trails, and more located throughout the state.”

The installation will be located at the South End’s Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology and will coincide with the 23rd annual South End Garden Tour, which is also being organized by the Trustees.

Following this weekend’s festivities, the Crane Beach pop-up will be relocated to an open piece of land near the Boston Children’s Museum from June 21 to July 15 and will feature weekly programs. The Trustees are planning additional pop-up events for the near future as well.
