A Friendly Reminder That the MBTA’s Fare Hikes Go in Effect on Friday

Getting around town is going to cost a bit more for public transportation patrons.
Starting on Friday, July 1, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s fare hikes will go in effect with prices increasing for pretty much each of its services. In January, the board that oversees the MBTA unanimously voted to raise fares across the system by 9.3 percent in hopes of generating around $42 million.
Here’s a quick rundown of some of the key fare increases that riders should expect.
Buses
Some bus riders will actually see a decrease in their fares. Fares will drop from $2.10 to $2 for people who use cash or individual CharlieTickets. However, passengers who use CharlieCards will see a 10 cent increase, from $1.60 to $1.70.
Subway
Individual rides using CharlieTickets on the subway will also see a 10 cent increase, from $2.65 to $2.75. Riders who use CharlieCards will see their fares go up by 15 cents, from $2.10 to $2.25.
MBTA LinkPass
The MBTA LinkPass will see a steeper fare increase that will cost riders an extra $9.50 per month, going from $75 to $84.50. The 7-day link pass will be going up by $2.25, from $19 to $21.25.
