Aly Raisman, U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team Take Gold at Olympics

Aly Raisman and the U.S. women’s gymnastics team once again proved why they’re the best in the world at the 2016 Olympics on Tuesday.

The Needham native and the rest of the squad sealed the deal on taking home gold medals with a dominant performance in Rio de Janeiro. The U.S. women’s gymnastics team has now won gold at two consecutive Olympics.

It was a particularly big night for Raisman and teammate Gabby Douglas, as they each won their third Olympic gold medals. Along with Madison Kocian, Laurie Hernandez, and Simone Biles, the team easily cruised to victory with near flawless performances all around.

After tearing up the floor exercise in the qualifying session, Raisman put on another show with her amazing routine. She also earned an incredible score of 15.833 during her vault in the team finals.

The U.S. team finished with a total score of 184.897, more than 8 points higher than Russia’s team, who narrowly edged out China to take second place.

Following the score announcement, the U.S. team came together and chanted, “We are the final five!” This year’s squad will be the last to feature five teammates since new rules will reduce the number to four for the upcoming 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Fans celebrated the win on social media, including Pittsfield native Elizabeth Banks. The actress was actually in the crowd cheering for America on the big day.

Raisman and the rest of her team will look to add to their trophy cases during the individual all-around finals on Thursday.
