Flour Plans Three More Bakeries in Cambridge and Boston

Joanne Chang has made good on her suggestion that the fifth Flour Bakery + Café could be in Harvard Square. The reigning James Beard Award-winning baker and proprietor of some of Boston’s favorite sweet shops, told the Boston Globe she’s opening the first of three new Flour locations in the Cambridge neighborhood this fall. (Update, October 25, 10:30 a.m.: Eater Boston reports Chang is targeting November 1 for the Harvard Square Flour.)

After Harvard Square, a weekday-only shop in Cambridgeport will debut in December, and another Back Bay location will open early next year, the Globe reported. Chang introduced Flour in the South End in 2000, and has since expanded it to Central Square, Back Bay at 131 Clarendon St., and Fort Point. An avid cyclist, the baker has previously said she prefers to keep the brand in Boston and Cambridge.

Chang is also chef/owner of Myers & Chang, along with her husband and business partner, Christopher Myers. The baker has said it was her partner’s vision that helped her grow the Flour brand. Chang and Myers are reportedly in talks to bring another restaurant to Cambridge; the baker didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking an update on that project.

This winter is about to bring a few fresh dining options to Harvard Square, a historic ’hood that has lost some of its energy to national chains over the past several years. Michael Scelfo’s Alden & Harlow is always a good option, and this month, the Improper Bostonian reports he’ll debut his latest, Waypoint, on the Harvard edge of Mass Ave.

The new Flour, located at 114 Mount Auburn St., will be just around the corner from the latest venture from the Island Creek Oyster Bar team. Whether that restaurant will be another ICOB, Row 34, or new concept from chef Jeremy Sewall, Garrett Harker, Skip Bennett, and Shore Gregory remains to be seen (the team says they’re concentrating on the anticipated October 2016 debut of ICOB Burlington first), it’s safe to say it will be a nice addition to the restaurant scene.

In Cambridgeport, Flour Bakery will be smaller than its usual cafés, but Chang told the Globe to expect her greatest hits. Sticky buns and kouign-amann, we’re looking at you. Flour Dalton Street will be directly behind the Prudential Center.
