Bill Weld Pretty Much Endorsed Hillary Clinton on Maddow

In case you’ve forgotten in all the excitement—or night sweat inducing dread, take your pick—former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld is running for vice president on the Libertarian Party ticket, alongside the geographically challenged Gary Johnson. But if Tuesday night’s interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow is any indication, it’s Weld who’s probably forgotten.

When asked about FBI director James Comey’s decision to publicly announce the agency was investigating more emails related to Hillary Clinton, Weld defended the Democratic nominee. “I’m here vouching for Mrs. Clinton, and I think it’s high time somebody did,” he said.

Weld even distanced himself from a press release issued by his own campaign, which came down hard against Clinton in the wake of Comey’s announcement. “Gary and I have not agreed on a number of substantive issues in this campaign,” he said. “I do not agree with that release.”

For good measure, Weld reserved some vitriol for Republican nominee Donald Trump, who has enjoyed an uptick in the national polls in the days following the FBI’s latest revelation.

“I see a big difference between the R candidate and the D candidate and I’ve been at some pains to say that I fear for the country if Mr. Trump should be elected,” Weld said. “It’s a candidacy without any parallel that I can recall. It’s content-free and very much given to stirring up envy and resentment and even hatred. And I think it would be a threat to the conduct of our foreign policy and our position in the world at large.”

While he said he previously believed the Libertarian Party had a shot at winning the November 8 contest, Weld said their absence from the three televised presidential debates “really foreclosed that option.”
