Emma’s Pizza Is Shutting Down in Cambridge
After decades of serving up pies in Cambridge, Emma’s Pizza will shutter its Kendall Square location at the end of the year and continue business in the South End of Boston. A Twitter user broke the news last night, and employees at the Cambridge shop confirmed it this morning. Emma’s will likely close at the end of next week, according to an employee. Owner Jeff Weingast was not immediately available to comment.
Emma’s is known for crispy crusts topped with creative flavor combinations (and very Cambridge names), like the Biotech, with a couple varieties of sausages and bacons, plus pepperoni and grilled chicken; and T.T. the Bear’s, with grilled chicken, red onion, tomato, capers, and goat cheese. It also offers apps, like Pedro’s guacamole; salads, sandwiches, and wine and beer.
The restaurant started in Revere Beach, and the original owners moved it to Huron Avenue in West Cambridge in the mid-1960s. Emma’s moved to Hampshire Street in 2000, and Weingast took it over in 2004. Earlier this year, Emma’s opened a takeout location on Columbus Avenue.
“We feel this is an amazing opportunity to jump over the river and get into a new market without being too far from our home store,” Weingast told Eater Boston at the time.
The area around Emma’s Cambridge restaurant has blown up in recent years. The pizzeria is in between where the Automatic just opened, and One Kendall Square, home to standbys like the Blue Room, State Park, and Cambridge Brewing Company, and 2016 arrivals the Smoke Shop and Mamaleh’s.
