New Balance Is Keeping Running Paths Clear This Winter

Snow has been scarce this winter, and New Balance wants to keep it that way—at least along the Charles.

The local sportswear company has pledged to help the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) clear trails along the river all winter long, allowing runners and walkers to stay outside no matter how nasty the weather gets. The sponsorship agreement, now in its seventh year, funds snow removal along the 17-mile Charles River paths network, from the Museum of Science all the way to Watertown, within 24 hours of a storm.

“Running is at the core of the New Balance brand and this partnership allows runners to train all winter long along the Charles River,” New Balance President and CEO Rob DeMartini said in a statement.

In addition to path preservation, New Balance will hold runner-centic events—offering encouragement, providing winter running tips, showcasing products and freebies, and so on—throughout the winter. The brand’s Boylston Street store will also offer 15 percent discounts the day after any snowfall of an inch or more.
