Situated on an ordinary residential street in Medford, this brick home stands apart. Unlike the rest of the houses on Riverside Avenue, it’s positioned diagonally from the road—in part because the place predates its neighbors by a few centuries. The Peter Tufts House was built around the 1680s, and is thought to be the oldest brick home in America.
The grand, eight-room colonial was constructed by Peter Tufts, a prominent settler of Medford and ancestor of Charles Tufts, the man who donated the land for Tufts University. His historic home, purchased by the Medford Historical Society & Museum in 1982, is now on the market for just under $660,000. It boasts a total of seven fireplaces, high ceilings, exposed beams, and several porthole windows. In addition to four bedrooms, there are two maid’s rooms, plus an unfinished attic.
The home’s deed includes a permanent preservation restriction, mandating the house cannot be subdivided or demolished. Many interior and exterior features are protected by these restrictions as well. Because of this, the historical society is searching for “the right buyer who understands their responsibilities and is enthusiastic about the house.”
