It’s an unwritten rule that the swag you run in is just as, if not more, important as all the training you do to prepare for a big race—the Boston Marathon is no exception. Although you might not be lacing up a pair of completely new sneakers for the big day, you might as well reward yourself for all that hard work. And the limited edition shoe New Balance is launching this year might just be the next worthy collectible in your growing closet.

Last year, New Balance launched two Marathon shoes inspired by the Charles River—a monumental landmark for many runners of the city. They featured different shades of blue to mimic the water, details like a tiny gold duck on the tongue, and even the Boston skyline. This year, New Balance is paying tribute to runners who prefer to make laps around the Boston Common and the Public Garden in the springtime.

The shoe, which is a rendition of the ever-popular 890 running shoe, are covered in vibrant pinks, yellows, oranges, and golds inspired by the tulips that sprout up by the George Washington statue and throughout the Common in the springtime. Because truly, is there a better sight than when the garden begins to come to life with not only new flowers and greenery but with people and activities? After a long winter hibernating, surely nothing—especially for runners who are happy to make their way off the treadmill.

Inside the sock liner of the shoe is a white throated sparrow, which is said to frequent the Common in the spring, and the shoes have gold throughout to symbolize runners’ “crowning moments.” The heel has the words “RUN BOS” and on the inside sole is a silhouette of the state of Massachusetts.

You can get your hands on these special kicks beginning April 1 online at newbalance.com or at the New Balance Boylston Store, the Global Flagship at Boston Landing, or at the John Hancock Sports and Fitness Expo before the Marathon.
