Celebrate New Murals at Underground at Ink Block with DJs, Fitness, and Food Trucks

Nine new murals are popping up beneath the I-93 overpass.

It’s not every weekend that you want to check out the views beneath the I-93 overpass, but if you want to hide away from the gray, stormy weather forecast for Saturday, there will be no better place to get a dose of color.

Underground at Ink Block, the eight acre underpass that the Ink Block developers transformed into an urban park two years ago, will be sporting a fresh coat of paint starting this weekend, thanks to the park’s 2019 Mural Project. The project called upon an A-list of street artists from around the world to deck out the underpass with bold, dynamic murals, and the team has been hard at work completing their paint jobs this week. These nine new additions—due to be ready for viewers on Saturday—bring Underground’s mural count up to a whopping 18 in total, making the “urban playground” one of the largest public street art installations in New England.

The featured mural artists have some serious street art credentials. From Soraya Marquez, who has adorned walls from the South Bronx to Paris with vibrant portraits of women, to Victor “MARKA27” Quinonez, whose massive murals have been seen closer to home in Central Square and Assembly Row, you can bet that these artists have let their imaginations run wild all around the concrete enclave.

To celebrate all this brand-new eye candy, local creative agency Street Theory, who worked with Underground to curate the murals, is hosting an “Underground GetDown” Saturday from 2-6 p.m. The (free!) block party kicks off with a fitness class from TrillFit, followed by food trucks, games, DJs, and endless opportunities to take in all that fresh art.
