Practice Pilates with Penguins for Free at the New England Aquarium
Outdoor voices is hosting a three-part fitness series with Pilates instructor Kara Duval at the New England Aquarium starting November 7.
The New England Aquarium, in all its underwater glory, isn’t just a great place for a Saturday afternoon family outing. It’s now also a great place to practice pilates.
As the mercury continues to plummet (with snow on the way), outdoor fitness series are long gone, but that doesn’t mean the Boston fitness scene is taking any type of break—instructors are simply moving indoors to different, and perhaps more creative, places to break a sweat. This new series, hosted by Outdoor Voices, is a three-class pilates practice starting on November 7 in the New England Aquarium—one of the best museums in Boston, you might say.
The series takes place every Thursday after the aquarium closes at 6:30 p.m. in the atrium. You’ll have views of the squawking penguins and the Giant Ocean Tank, a four-story, 23-foot-deep tank home to coral reef, stingrays, eels, and fish of all kind. Keep an eye out for Myrtle the Turtle, a green sea turtle who has called the Aquarium home since 1970.
Local trainer Kara Duval, who regularly teaches at North End Yoga and Equinox, will teach each class. She is an advanced Stott Pilates instructor and believes breath is the driving force behind every movement and transition, and that, paired with optimal form, allows your body to move to the best of its ability. With a heavy emphasis on the pelvis, rib cage, and shoulder mobility, she’ll have you moving and feeling better after each class. Working through a full range of motion, the class is dynamic and functional, meaning you’ll be able to use some of the principles she teaches you during your everyday life.
The classes are free, but you are encouraged to register in advance and arrive at least 15 minutes early for check-in. Please bring your own mat.
Free, November 7, November 14, November 21, 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m., New England Aquarium, 1 Central Wharf, Boston, events.outdoorvoices.com.
