Fair warning to the future owners of this home: You may never get over the view. Beyond the 20-plus acres of private property, you can soak in majestic vistas of Hurlburt Hill, the highest point of nearby Bartholomew’s Cobble—a Trustees-managed National Natural Landmark just a five-minute walk away. There are more distant layers to the stunning panorama, too, including mountains and hills across the southwestern border into Connecticut.

But the vast estate offers plenty of delights of its own. The many massive trees, one of which branches out directly in front of the house like a scene from Big Fish, cast spots of shade around the yard in the summer, and put on a personal foliage show in the fall. Then there’s an in-ground, solar-heated pool, which is framed by a patio, a bed of flowers, and a split rail fence. Next to the pool, an old shed with exposed rafters and an all-wooden interior can serve as a pool house, or a rustic hall for parties and family gatherings. But mostly, it’s the best spot around to appreciate the outdoors without actually being outside—two windows, one rectangular and one octagonal, take up almost an entire wall each.

And yes, the Folk Victorian home itself is just as lovely as its landscape. First built in 1871, it was then renovated in 1987, and refurbished again seven years later. The result is a pleasant collage of old-timey features and modern conveniences. In the galley kitchen, for example, a stainless stove and glass-front cabinets are paired with a retro orange wall and blue floral wallpaper. The wallpaper continues into the adjoining living room, where a rounded bank of arched windows creates an adorable breakfast nook.

One of the property’s most recent additions, constructed in 1998, is a separate, air-conditioned studio. Vaulted ceilings and skylights grace the main level, while the mezzanine makes room for a workspace and a full bath. The building is perfect for use as an occasional guest house, or for daily use as an on-site office. Why would you want to leave those views for a cubicle, anyway?
